This is related to my search for the Berserk film when it came out in Japan and I couldn't find it.

Berserk Golden Age Arc I: Egg of the Supreme King Review and Summary

SPOILER ALERT!  SPOILER ALERT!  SPOILER ALERT!

  • So we start off with the battle shown in the infamous 10 minute preview of the movie that is popular on the internet. This depicts the battle between Guts and Bazuso.
  • So Guts quickly gets rid of Bazuso by slashing through his stomach and then his head, which resulted in an eye ball being popped out and a nasty headache. Above is the Band of the Hawk watching Guts. I assume they are talking about how Griffith could have gotten rid of Bazuso just as easily as Guts would have. And we end the scene with Griffith gawking at Guts as if he was the most amazing thing he has seen.
  • SICK MOVIE INTRO WITH ALL YOUR FAVORITE MANGA CHARACTERS!
  • Now we have the obvious flaming general trying to persuade Guts into joining them, but he “politely” refuses. A few minutes later Guts is now being ambushed by Corkus and his party, which is funny to see Corkus’ reaction when everyone around him is dying.
  • Here comes Casca to the rescue under Griffith’s orders. Guts ends up cutting Casca’s horse into minced meat and almost kills Casca until Griffith saves her ass.
  • Griffith’s armor visual affects are amazing. He glistens in the Sun. He defeats Guts just as in the manga, with a swift stab to the armpit.
  • Okay. Wow. Now Guts is dreaming (Everything is seen through Guts in first person) and you see this tall blurry figure, and Guts seems to be really, really small; tugging on the tall figures belt and the tall figure pushing him away. It must be Gambino AND HOLY SHIT DONOVAN THE RAPIST JUST APPEARED! All you see is his face hovering over Guts, smiling and laughing, and he is ugly as ever. (Keep in mind this is all a dream so everything is funky and shaped weird.) Now we see through Guts’ eyes of him picking up his sword and killing Gambino. Now running away while being chased by horses. Guts soon wakes up in a burst of sweat and looks frightened.
  • God I hope they do that scene sometime in the next set of films.
  • Guts gets a rude awakening with a punch from Casca and he proceeds outside the tent to meet Judeau. Griffith is now walking towards Guts with the camera fixed on his behelit. He hands back Guts’ sword and they walk through the camp. There you see Corkus, Pippin, and Rickert. Corkus is acting like an asshole, Pippin is acting obese, and Rickert is acting badass as always.
  • Griffith is now asking Guts to join him. The facial expressions that are captured are so spot on and mind blowing, sometimes humorous due to Guts’ homophobic reaction towards Griffith.
  • Of course Guts declines and they battle, which results in Guts losing by Griffith’s Sumo Shoulder Socket Removal technique, and him having no choice but to join the Band of the Hawks. Now I believe Griffith is explaining to Guts how he intends to someday have his own kingdom.
  • We have now transitioned to several years in the future. A large battle is taking place where Guts charges infront of the Band of the Hawk and takes out the leader of the Black Ram Iron Lance Heavy Calvary with a single strike. I just noticed they totally cut out the sneak attack on the camp at night, where Guts had to provide cover as rear guard, and prove his place in the Hawks.
  • Guts is now apologizing to Griffith for the reckless act he did earlier with charging infront of the group. Griffith doesn’t seem to mind and is just glad Guts is alive.
  • We skip to the nobles arguing over how Griffith, a commoner, is now being knighted. (Sorry for the very dull descriptions, but I’m watching and trying to type as fast as I can. I don’t want to pause :P)
  •  We now arrive where Guts is arguing with the Hawks to get out of his way because the men he sent into the dungeon haven’t came back in a decent amount of time. They took out the park where Dillos came back literally ripped in pieces, warning Guts about “Zodd…. Nosferatu…”
  • I can now see how this movie is moving at a very fast pace, also skipping Guts and Griffith’s water fight, where I thought it played an important roll in what Griffith’s goal in life is… TO HAVE HIS OWN KINGDOM AND TRAMPLE OVER EVERYONE AND TO ONE DAY RAPE CASCA. Something among those lines.
  • Now Guts is walking into the entrance of the dungeon with corpses everywhere. Very erie! And here is Nosferatu Zodd’s flashy appearance. You see how Guts is unsure of what to make of him, but they start clashing swords in no time. During their fight, they bounce back and forth between Judeau telling the hawks about a man who keeps appearing on battlefields for hundreds of years. A man by the name of, Nosferatu Zodd. Corkus, being a prick is amused by Judeau’s fairytale, and we transition back to the fight where Guts over powers Zodd and cuts into his shoulder.
  • Wow his transformation is just….scary and well done. And WOW, he is gigantic, pushing Guts around like a rag doll.
  • Giffith’s party appears and they barrage Zodd with arrows.  Now comes the part where Griffith saves Guts’ ass…. sort of. Griffith gets slammed into a pillar by Zodd’s tail, revealing the Egg of the King. Zodd spots it and you can just see the shear surprise and terror in his eyes.
  • He then begins to chuckle and looks at Guts like, “Boy, you have no idea what’s coming your way.” He then makes his prophecy to Guts (“A death you can never escape.”) and makes a clean get away out of the dungeon. Casca is now turning all bitch on Guts for letting Griffith into this amount of danger.
  • Moving onto a month ahead, we see that Guts is outside the palace, still recovering from his wounds, doing what he does best, swinging his sword in frustration while thinking about Casca being a bitch.
  • Griffith now shows up. Guts asks about Griffith’s strange necklace. Griffith hands it over to Guts where the behelit gives him an evil stare. Startled, Guts throws it in the air and almost falls off the ledge where he is sitting. After Griffith laughs it over, the two start talking rather serious, possibly where Griffith asks Guts, “Do you think of me as a bad person?”
  • Before Guts can answer, the King of Midland appears with his brother Julius and Charolette. Charlotte is hiding behind a pillar and Griffith catches eyes with her. Possibly plotting to have sex with her sometime in the future… anyways. She trips while walking down the stairs and Griffith catches her.  Julius gets butthurt and bitch slaps Griffith. We now see the Hawks attending the fox hunting. Guts seems unamused -_-.
  • Griffith and Charlotte meet up and Griffith shows her the Super Ultra Awesome Fancy Leafy Whistle Technique. Griffith ends up having to save Charlotte from her run away horse and Griffith gets shot with the poison tipped arrow as an assassination attempt from Julius. He pulls out the arrow and reveals that the Egg of the King shielded him from the arrow. Griffith is now glaring at Julius with his hawk-eyed stare.
  • Guts and Griffith are now talking over how they will assassinate Julius. Griffith knew who it was and now wants Guts to sneak in the castle and kill him. Meanwhile, Julius is doing sword practice with his son, and eventually kicks his son’s ass because his son is a wimp and can’t handle his sword correctly. After a heated argument with the old man who watches over his son, Julius sits in his room, drinking wine and angrily throwing the empty cup in the fire.
  • The effects in this movie still amaze me. The fire looks great and the water visuals are outstanding, same with the sky.
  • So now Julius is mad when his plan is foiled and he feels a draft come in the room. Guts quickly gets rid of him and accidentally kills his son. This scene was very emotional, seeing Guts’ reaction when he realizes what he has just done. Guts holds out his hand to the boy. He grasps his hand and dies after a large amount of blood he coughs up. Guts is soon discovered and in a panic he bolts out of the castle killing all in his path. The boy’s caretaker see’s him and demands the guards they find Guts and not to let him escape. Which they fail at horribly. Guts is shot in the arm with a crossbow as he lunges off the castle wall to escape and lands in a lake.
  • We now see the Band of the Hawk in a tavern eating and enjoying themselves. Guts shows up looking like shit and asks Casca for Griffith. She replies that he is with Charolette and he then turns around and heads for Griffith. Guts finds Griffith talking to Charolette about his whole “friendship and equality for a man” Guts overhears and you can see in his face how upset he is. Casca, who is behind Guts, joins in on listening to the conversation and is jealous over Griffith and Charlotte’s relationship.
  • A maid from the castle is now running out in a panic, giving Charlotte the news that her Uncle and young cousin(?) have been murdered. Griffith silently gives off a delicious, evil smile and Guts walks off.
  • The movie ends almost abruptly with a still shot of Griffith, Casca, and Guts. Griffith still with his smirk, Casca looking upset, and Guts looks sort of lost; almost not knowing what to do now.
  • Then a preview for the second film that hasen’t been shown yet starts. We see Casca and Guts falling off the cliff, Casca naked, covered in leaves inside of the tree trunk, Casca in a fancy dress, Guts leaving the Band of the Hawk, and Guts and Griffith dueling.

                                                                  FIN

So, they did leave many things out that made you more attached to the characters. It felt like the whole beginning of the Golden Age was crunched down so much just so they can make the 2nd and 3rd films more about certain events. Such as the second one will be mostly all about the Battle for Doldrey and the 3rd movie will be mostly about the pre-Eclipse and maybe some post-Eclipse. I believe this movie was rushed because if they actually followed the manga, the whole beginning of the Golden Age arc would take 3 films, so I do not blame the producers. Though, I wish they would have at least put in more key parts of the story in. Overall, I enjoyed this film. It gave the basic storyline to the beginning of the Golden Age arc and the main issues with the protagonists. I just hope for the rest of the films they don’t cut out so much and stay at least 80% true to the parts of the manga. I’m horrible at reviews so sorry if you’re not satisfied, haha. I still have hope for the other films.

But overall, I would give this film an 8/10.

Berserk is just too awesome for an average score.

I will be doing a play by play review as I watch Berserk Golden Age Arc I, which will be uploaded after I’m finished.

I will be as honest and less harsh as possible(unlike some people) because I am a true fan of this series. I don’t really care if they shortened a few scenes, it all matters on how they presented the film and if they stayed close to the manga story. With that being said, I’ll start the film now.
